Writing demands investment, and good writing requires a good editor. After writing and rewriting my manuscript, I searched for a professional who would not handle my precious baby gingerly, but one courageous and skillful, one who promised brutal honesty. I felt like my novellas were in great shape when I sent them in, but Cayce dug in and found places where I had plot holes. All of her suggestions are done in a professional and upbeat manner. When my stories make her laugh (in a good way) she lets me know I hit the mark for humor.

I was so nervous about my upcoming book, on which I had worked so hard, for so long, and I needed another copyedit pass and some desperately needed encouragement. Cayce jumped in immediately and not only made some great catches in the manuscript, but she really “got” the book immediately. That is saying a lot because my book is complex and deals with a lot of history. Cayce was stern when it was called for—there were many inconsistencies and errors, which she corrected—but she also was very positive and supportive. I have worked with copy editors before, but Cayce is head-and-shoulders above what I expected. Every writer deserves an editor of Cayce’s caliber and generosity.

Although I am a career journalist and comfortable telling a story, there were flaws in the story line that I just couldn’t see myself. I was too close and too familiar to see them on my own. I don’t generally write short reviews. Given that the people most likely to be reading these reviews are other authors, they could really use details. A manuscript is a precious thing to which authors can often give more attention that an unfortunate number of people give to their actual children. I came to Kingsman after parting ways with my previous editor. This was not an easy transition.
